Guardian Hand System -The Guardian hand system has one hand always backing up the other for defense, trapping and striking.

Silo/Sempok &  Dempok - Stepping drill and positioning used for conditioning the legs and strengthen the body. The position is also found in Yoga & Qi Gong. It is used to purify the kidney meridian and to strengthen the root center.  Also these positions and movement also have combative application.  They are used to transfer energy from one position to another.

Dalem & Luar - inside and outside positioning for entries, take downs, reference points in combat.

Shoulder positions - the proper use of shoulder position and alignment in combat facilitates take downs, off balancing, directing opponents, striking, superior balance, movement, root, and stability.  Students focus on 5 shoulder positions using exact degrees (90, 60, 45, 30, and 15) to improve position and structural alignment in combat.

Horse Set -  Drills done from  a horse stance to strengthen the body and to teach  basic silat root motions, techniques, and principles.

jurus -The jurus are the fundamental root motions of the upper body. From them we draw combative attitudes, offensive and defensive application, striking combinations, vital target awareness and much more.  jurus are performed, standing, kneeling, sitting, and lying on the ground.

jurus we teach and study:

Sera 1-18

Kilat Djurus 1- 4

Langkahs - Langkahs are platforms used to train your foot work.  They are used to educate the feet to move effectively in combat. Each langkah consists of a geometric pattern designed to improve the fighter's foot work, angulations of upper and lower body,  leg techniques such as stepping, kicking, foot sweeps (Sapu), foot drags (Biset), Sempok and Dempok,  precise placement of force and energy for throws, take downs and off balancing, offensive, defensive and evasive fighting strategies for single or multiple attackers.  Langkah drills are practiced with djurus to get a complete understanding of root motions and to build coordination.   The langkahs we study are Luru - the straight line,  Miring, Suda Miring, Tiga (triangle) and Sliwa or Ampat (square), Lima or Sekurung (5 points or cross). Djurus, Sambuts, technique, principles can be used on any langkah to make the practitioner superior in mobility.

Sambuts - Two man exercises used to teach  body position and fighting application.  They are designed to teach the  student self defense options he can use regardless of where he may find himself positioned in relation to his opponent. Sambuts contain the root motions for proper alignment, throwing, off balancing, vital target striking, locks and sweeping techniques.

Pukulan - To Strike with a purpose.  Pukulan is used in conjunction with Marma Adi (Pressure points) to destroy oncoming attacks, devastate and manipulate the opponent's body into vulnerable positions for knock outs, or deadly take downs.

Kicking - Front Kick, Groin Scoop, Shin Kick, Hook kick, Crecent Kick, Foot jab, Side Kick, Foot stomp, shin scrape, Iron Broom.  To maximize power and body structure, kicks are performed on Langkahs with appropriate shoulder positions.

Marma Adi - Pressure points, vital points, nerves and meridians used for destructive and healing applications. It is an ancient system that originated from Yogic Ayurevdic medicine from India and Tibet.  Many Silat systems rely on marma adi to deliver deadly blows and nerve strike to render an opponent either unconscious or dead.

Sparring - Empty hand sparring , Armed sparring, Unarmed vs. Armed, 1 against 1, 3 against 1 (multiple attackers).

Kembangan - The Flower Dance - Historically the Kembangan was designed to display the mastery of the art of silat.  In some circles its performance is used as a ritual offering to gurus, spirits, deities and higher powers.  The dancer with the most finesse and control over the motion and the mental attitudes was considered to be a great warrior.  Some silat masters say that the kembangan itself teaches the warrior how to fight.  Distinctive to this dance is the portrayal of archetypes such as various animals and deities.  The warrior learns to emulate the various archetypes and in doing so adopts at an innate level the qualities and strengths of these archetypes.   In some instances it has been used through out history to camouflage the martial sciences from colonists.  Kembangan teaches flow and self expression.  It helps students develop smoothness and subtlety in their Silat.   In a Kembangan the student moves through fighting positions and applications in subtle manner much like tai chi. The silat player uses, subtle energy (Prana), combative motions, timing, balance, fighting strategy, distinctive mental states and attitudes. It helps them harness emotional stability and mental focus which intern sharpens his awareness as a fighter.  With practice the kembangan enables the silat player to hypnotize and mesmerize his adversary.

Pencak Silat and Tantric Arts

By Santiago Dobles

Pencak Silat can be found almost all over South-East Asia.  Its roots can be traced back to Ancient India, Tibet, China, Siam, and Persia.  It has been influenced by Hindu, Buddhist, and Muslim culture. There is archaeological evidence of Indian Vedic empires and Buddhist empires that once ruled over South-East Asia thousands of years ago each promoting its culture, martial arts, and spiritual philosophy.  There are many similarities between Pencak Silat and the ancient Tantric arts (Hatha Yoga, Vayam, Kalaripayyat, Vajrayana Tantra,  Ayurveda, Tsal Lung Trul Khor, Dance of Nataraja).  Either practitioner, the Tantric or the Silat player will find similarities in their movements, mental states, shamanic rituals, language, and philosophies. Below is a basic explanation and use of the 5 elements in Tantra Yoga.  You will notice that some of it can apply and is similar to the warrior's way of cultivation found in Pencak Silat.
